Faults:The only thing I ever had to do to this bike in the four years that I owned it was change the tires, and did not have to do that much. I always ran Metzler touring tires on it. General Comments:Excellent bike. Started first time, every time. Handled well, light weight.
Bike also had a fairly low seat height. I would highly recommend this bike to anyone. The only negative would have to be the way it handled in a severe side wind, but a lot of corrective leaning sorted that out too.Great bike for beginners and experienced riders, and also good (in my opinion) for women looking to do some long distance touring. Quote:Originally posted by Gary:Thanks. Does anyone know what maintenance is like, or how they are to ride? From what I understand (haven't owned one, but I've had a couple of boxers, both airhead and oilhead), maintenance is typicall BMW.
Most items are easy and straightforward. Valve adjustment is likely a little more complicated, but far from impossible. Can't give you a ride report. Except to say that my friends who have owned them tend toward the sporting and sport touring side of riding and have seemed pleased with them for both short agressive rides and long hauls.Kev. Watch for rotted rubber things like vacuum lines and fuel lines. They can make'm run like shyte and leak fuel. Fuel pumps also take a dump if they haven't had the filter changed regularly and have sat for a while.
Front engine covers also tend to leak as well. You are talking about an 18 year old bike that is more complex than an airhead of similar vintage. If in doubt, take it to a shop you trust and have them check it out. From what you posted, this bike was once ridden frequently but has been sitting for a while since 2001. IMO, price is not bad but still have a shop check it out before you buy.
